Below are some extracts from our Technical Presentation Skills manual.

Adapting presentations to fit a technical environment data and audience

Adapting a presentation to a technical audience and presenting technical data can require careful consideration of the audience (for example their expertise, interests, and expectations), especially as technical audiences are often used to a 1 way flow of information format delivery (where information is given, without the need to reflect or feedback), rather than a standard presentation 2 way style of delivery.

Key strategies that can be employed to help the effectiveness can be;

1. Know Your Audience

Understand Their Expertise: Assess the technical knowledge and experience level of your audience. Tailor the depth of content accordingly.

Identify Their Interests: Know ‘Whats in it for them’.  Focus on topics and data that are relevant to their work and interests.

Consider Their Expectations: Know what the audience expects to gain from your presentation, such as insights, solutions, or detailed analysis.  Let them know the format of delivery, ie that it will be reflective and may involve more participation than they are used to.

2. Structure Your Presentation

Clear Outline: Start with a clear outline of what you will cover. Include an introduction, main points, and a conclusion.

Logical Flow: Ensure a logical progression of ideas. Use a sequential flow to present data and concepts, making it easy for the audience to follow.

Signposting: Use clear signposts throughout the presentation to indicate transitions between sections or topics.

3. Present Technical Data Effectively

Visual Aids: Use graphs, charts, and diagrams to represent complex data visually. Ensure they are clear, well-labelled, and not overly cluttered.

Simplify Complex Data: While technical audiences generally like detail, make sure it is relevant.  Break down complex data into simpler components. Explain each part before integrating them into a larger context.

Highlight Key Points: Use highlights, bold text, or colour to emphasise important data points and trends.
