Updating work done

i have a nightmare trying to account for work done each day on a task. A task might be only a day long but could easily be done in hourly bits over a few days, but to account for this always seems to go wrong!

RE: updating work done

Hi Piers

Thank you for your question. It sounds like you might have one day of Work to be carried out over several days of duration. You may find it easier to update your tasks by either Switching to the Resource Usage view then right clicking on the right hand table. From the menu that appears you will see an option to display Actual Work. Selecting this allows you to record what really took place, day by day. Project will adjust the Duration to reflect the changes you make.

Alternatively in the Gantt Chart view you may prefer to add the Actual and Remaining Work columns and progress your tasks that way.

Let me know how you get on and if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew

RE: updating work done

Thank you Andrew. The issue is usually with the way that updating actual work seems to keep throwing the duration and % complete values out completely, but I figured from the course that I just need to ignore this value ... would this be right?

RE: updating work done

Hi Piers

Thanks for coming back to me. Rather than ignore it I think maybe see it for what it is i.e. % duration complete. It's likely that you'll be more focussed on tracking actual work and remaining work.

Let me know how you get on.

Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:

Use Autofill in MS Project

a. Complete 1st entry
b. Select cell with entry to be copied
c. Click & drag autofill handle over the lines to also contain the same information. (the autofill handle is the little black square in the bottom right hand corner of the heavy lack outline on the selected cell)
