If you vlookup from an external workbook, can this link to the external book be saved so as it will reference it even if that book is not open?

Thank you for your question.
The answer is yes, a link will be created between the two files which means that you don't need to have both files open for the vlookup to work. What you will find is that in the file where you have set up the vlookup formula, if you go to Edit - Links, there will be a link referencing the table data from the other file.
Excel will prompt you to choose if you want to updated the information in the file containing the link when it is opened.
