Upload issues
Hi there
I have had my website up and going for a few months now, with few problems. Lately however I have been experiencing difficulties updating my site.
I think I may have accidentally changed some of the info in the site definition.
Below is how it all reads, maybe you can spot something wrong?
LOCAL INFO
Site Name: New Website (i didn't name it to begin with)
Root Folder: (corresponds to the correct location on my hard drive)
"refresh local file list automatically" Checked
Default Image Folder: (empty)
Links relative to: Site Root
HTTP address: http://ftp. (myhost).net/therollingimage.com
Case sensitive links: Unchecked
Cache: Enabled
REMOTE INFO
Access: FTP
FTP Host: ftp.(myhost).net
Host Directory: htdocs/therollingimage.com/
Login: (checked and correct)
Password: (checked and correct)
(Following three boxes): unchecked
(next three boxes): First two checked, third unchecked.
When I hit the test button it says dreamweaver connected to web server successfully.
When I change something on a page and save, the blue thinking bar appears breifly, but when i check my site nothing has changed.
As far as I can tell all the info i need is in the right place, am I missing anything obvious.
Thanks
Duncan
RE: upload issues
Hi Duncan,
All of the information you provided about your site connection within Dreamweaver seems OK. The problem might lay with your web browser in that it is displayed a cashed pages instead of the current live page. If you try pressing the F5 key while browsing your site, that should display the live page.
Hope this helps
David
RE: upload issues
Hi David
I'm still having trouble, even when i view on other computers and refresh the pages the non-updated site shows up (you can check this, go to www.therollingimage.com. If the first page says "last updated 26.11.07" in red then it's old)
Could the problem be in the Local Info "HTTP Address" box? I have in there my website address after the ftp info for my host. Should this just have my website address in it as I'd type in to the address bar on a browser?
Thanks
Duncan
RE: upload issues
Duncan,
In remote info, try selecting the check box "use passive ftp". That is the only difference we have, other than I have my site links relative to the document.
Give it a go and let me know if you still have problems.
David
RE: upload issues
Hi David
I tried using passive FTP but still no luck. I wasn't advised to use this by my host and when it was all working properly i didn't have to use it.
Under the 'basic' tab in site definition do i need to put the ftp address in front of my web address on the first page?
In the test URL part (still in the basic section) I just have http://www.therollingimage.com , should I have the ftp address before the site address?
Also the last sentence of your reply didn't make sense, could you re write that part please in case it's relevant.
Thanks for your support
Duncan
RE: upload issues
Duncan,
I have corrected the previous post.
Firstly I would try using a separate ftp program such cute ftp or WS_ftp. Use the original setting. Then just manually ftp your files across to the web-server. By doing this we can find out if it is Dreamweaver or your hosting that is not working.
If the separate ftp program works, then it is the settings within Dreamweaver otherwise it is a problem with your web hosts ftp.
You do not need to include ftp under the basic tab.
Hope this helps

RE: upload issues
Hi David
I'm still battling on. I have copied and paste the files for my site now, moved it, re directed the local info etc and started a fresh. In the 'view in browser window' all appears well but still no changes on the real web, even when i relaod the browser.
Also when i now try to replace pictures in my site it tells me that the file is outside of the root folder, (i moved fom C drive to D) even though I have told dreamweaver to look in D drive in the local info.
I still have the original files on my C drive, and i still have the original site listed in the 'manage sites' bit, although i have deleted all the info from there. Could this be causing some conflict?
It's all getting a bit much!
Thanks For your help.
Duncan
RE: upload issues
Duncan,
Moving the files from one drive to another should not cause any issues as long as you set the site up in the same way as before, and make sure the path for the local site is correct.
As I said in the previous post, please try using a stand alone ftp package, as this will isolate your problem.

Duncan: "Could the problem be in the Local Info "HTTP Address" box? I have in there my website address after the ftp info for my host. Should this just have my website address in it as I'd type in to the address bar on a browser?"
Yes. This should be your full URL as you would type into a browser, not FTP information.
How are you getting on? I notice the date on your site is still 'old' so I assume you haven't fixed the problem yet.
To troubleshoot, try uploading a brand new page (eg. test01.html) and see if it gets up there by typing in full URL into browser.
If it doesn't, then definitely something wrong with settings. If it does, could be a caching issue.
Also in Dreamweaver, try switching to Full FTP view (click icon on SITE panel and actually drag the LOCAL file from the right, over to the REMOTE server on the left.
If this doesn't work, try deleting the file from remote server first, prove it's actually gone (in browser) then upload file.

RE: upload issues
Thanks rich,
I'm still trying. I tried using cute ftp but encounterd some problems with that so haven't tried since. The pages all appear as i'd like in the preview browser section, but not on line. I'm not sure about the cache thing because I have opened the site on computers which i have not used before and it still appears as the non-updated version.
I will try your changes later today.
Would it cause problems if i copied all of my files on to my work pc, then changed the root folder info in the site manager to point there? If i do this can i still work off my home laptop or can i only work from one computer?
Thanks for the ongoing support, it's appreciated.
Duncan
RE: upload issues
The local root folder setting can cause problems, especially if you don't select the actual root folder. eg. if your web site on your computer is stored at c:\sites\duncan\ and you have c:\sites as your local root folder, dreamweaver would show just the duncan folder in the list of files. You would then expand this folder to show all web site files, but not realise that you are actually '1 deep' into the duncan folder. Then, when you upload a file, dreamweaver creates the 'duncan' folder and copies the files into it on the remote site.
So check your local files in dreamweaver are not a folder deep. ie it should have 'site - (site name)' at the top, and then immediately underneath all the files in your web site.
And then also change to remote view (may need to connect), and ensure there are no folders there that you don't know about. If you find one that looks suss, go into it, you may find some 'uploads' hiding there, which is where you've been uploading to since these problems started.
I hope the above makes sense.
You can work from two local computers, but my recommendation would be to always download the latest file from the REMOTE server (ie. always 'get' before you edit) so that you don't overwrite any changes you made at work or vice versa.
ie. in this case there would be 3 copies of the file: remote, work and home. If you edit a file at work and upload, all is fine. But then if you work on same file at home, you wouldn't have the changes made at work. So download the latest version from remote to your home machine before beginning any editing.
Dreamweaver has a feature for this called check-in/check-out - see it in Remote settings of your site.
Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

RE: upload issues
Hi Rich
The problem has been solved. In my remote info in the ftp bit the folder designated by my host was called htdocs, but the info i was putting in the section on my site definition was htdocs/therollingimage, so i had my whole site in a folder within my site if you see what i mean.
I appreciate your help.
Many thanks
Duncan
