I have an excel file that I need some help in manipulating the data

I think its a pivot table query - I need to obtain total transaction count by city ie i have a hotel name, city, transaction amount and I need to collate all spend in one city by hotel name.

Yes, that definitely sounds like a Pivot Table task to me. If you haven't messed with Pivots before have a look here for a good walkthrough. If you going to count transactions, you might need to change the default analysis on the Pivot Table from Sum to Count:

Excel tip:

Validating text entries

1. Select the range of cells.
2. From the Data menu, select Validation.
3. Select the Settings tab.
4. From the Allow dropdown list, select Custom.
5. In the Formula box, enter the following formula:

=IsText (A1)

where A1 is the first cell in the range.
6. Click OK.
