How do I set up a new project plan?

RE: Project Plan

Hello Madeline,

Hope you enjoyed your Microsoft Project Intro Intermediate course with Best STL.

Thank you for your question regarding how to set up a new project plan.

This question is too broad to be answered here in full. First of all the planning stage of a project is not usually performed using MS Project software. This is carried out after a series of meetings are held where details of the project are identified and recorded for later input into MS Project. i.e. Project stages/phases, tasks, milestones etc.

The preferred step-by-step setup is as follows:
Go to File Properties > Create title for your project > OK
Save the file
Create a company calendar > add this to the Global.mpt file
In the Project menu go to Project information
Select start date for your project
Select company calendar from the drop-down list > OK
Right-click the Gantt chart area select Non-Working Time
Select company calendar from the drop-down list > OK
In the Task Name column of the Entry Table
Enter summary tasks
Insert sub-tasks making sure to indent them correctly
Add durations
Link tasks as required
Create resources in the Resource Sheet
Assign resources to each task
Change task types if necessary
Change predecessor if necessary
Add deadline dates if required
Add constraints if required
Show the Critical path using the Gantt Chart Wizard
Set the baseline > Save

Now you are good to go!

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.

MS Project tip:

Use Autofill in MS Project

a. Complete 1st entry
b. Select cell with entry to be copied
c. Click & drag autofill handle over the lines to also contain the same information. (the autofill handle is the little black square in the bottom right hand corner of the heavy lack outline on the selected cell)
