Milestones

Hi
I am working on a project across 100 of our stores and am currently putting together a project programme for this. I am adding in milestones but because there are so many lines in my programme it is difficult to tell when a store has missed a milestone deadline (each store has 7 lines associated with it making the total amount of lines 700!) Is there any way of having the milestone as a visibleline from the top to the bottom of the programme and then if a store misses the deadline there is some form of warning?

RE: Milestones

Hello Oliver,

Hope you enjoyed your Microsoft Project course with Best STL.

Thank you for your question regarding deadlines that you wish to add to your project. Milestones are generally not used to monitor when tasks go past their expected date of completion. They are usually linked to a specific task which when completed will announce (not literally) the completion of that particular phase of the project.

There are two ways to warn you when a specific task has gone past its deadline date. These are as follows: -

1) Double click the required task and select the 'Advanced' tab. In the 'Constrain Task' section, select a date from the 'Deadline' drop-down calendar. This does not act as a restriction in any way, but, will place a red warning icon in the indicators column to warn you when the task has gone past its deadline date.

2) You can set a constraint to the required task which will give you a warning message when tasks before this one try to move thus affecting the date set in the constaint. The constraints you could use would be either Finish No Later Than / Start No Later Than or Must Finish On. The last one is the most restrictive. This will only work if you haven't switched off the 'Advice from the Planning Wizard' which is on by default.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.

MS Project tip:

Link tasks using predecessor column - project

a. First, note ID number of the task you want to link to (predecessor). Then, in the predecessor column of the task you want to link to (successor), type the predecessor task's ID number.
b. The link will be a Finish to Start (the default type).
c. Or you can add in a code for a different relationship type
i. SS = Start to Start
ii. FF = Finish to Finish
iii. SF = Start to Finish
d. You don't have to type the task ID numbers in any specific order, but you must separate multiple tasks with commas.
