Default settings for Project

Hi

I know that for a lot of Option settings, you can Set As Default to in effect configure the Global.mpt file. However I was wanting to also configure the default text font and size but can't seem to work out how to do this.

I was able to locate the global.mpt file but am unable to open this as I would for example with normal.dot.

Any clues as to how to do this??

Thanks again Andrew for a cracking 2 days
Piers

RE: Default settings for Project

Hi Piers

Thanks for your question - it can be a bit frustrating as only some settings are stored in the global.mpt. For things like Text style you might want to set up a blank project and format it as you require then save as a template (File > Save As and choose template as the type). When you start a new project begin by choosing this template so the formatting is already in place.

It's probably best not to try and edit global.mpt directly. It performs a similar tasks to normal.dot but isn't designed to be directly edited. Use templates instead.

Hope this helps - do let us know if you have any further questions. Thanks for the feedback too!

Kind regards,
Andrew

RE: Default settings for Project

Hi Andrew

I have actually just found the answer this morning. After a little playing, I realised that when I was setting the Text Style, I am of course setting it for that view, not the font for the whole project

So to set defaults like this, we just need to configure all the views as to how we want them, then copy these over to the global.mpt file

The weird thing is that when you create a new project, it's still showing Arial, but when you add a new task, it does take on the new font, so this seems to be a mini 'feature'

RE: Default settings for Project

Hi Piers

That's true the global.mpt file will store it on your machine and is used for new documents. You would need to copy to other gobal.mpt files for other machines (using organizer). Alternatively a single template could be created and shared by several people. Whichever works best for you. Will try myself and see if I can recreate that mini 'feature' you mentioned.

Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:

Keep constraining dates to a minimum

As far as possible avoid fixing the dates of your tasks. For example try to steer of clear dragging task bars in the Gantt chart to move them on the timeline or entering dates directly into the Start / Finish fields.

Date constraints such as these limit Microsoft Project's ability to automatically adjust your project whenever you add, remove or modify the duration of your tasks. Instead use the logic in your task dependencies that link your tasks to enable Project to calculate the start and finish dates for you.
