Material Cost changes during Project Execution
How do you account for changes to material resource costs during project execution? As an example if I build a house on the assumption that I am paying £100 per cubic metre of cement and the actual cost is £200 per cubic metre, how does MS Project track that change against the baseline?
thanks
Paul
RE: Material Cost changes during Project Execution
Hi Paul
Thank you for your question.
If the rate for the material is changed MS Project applies the new rate across the whole project, including work that has already taken place.
If you wish to record a rate change part way through the project try this instead. On the resource sheet double click the material resource. In the Resource information sheet click on Costs. In the A table use the first available blank row to enter the start date for the new rate, what the rate will be. MS Project will now apply this rate for this resource from the effective date.
To see the changes in costs over the life of the project switch to Task Usage view, right click on the table on the right side of the screen and select Actual costs.
You can also see the variance between baseline and actual by going to View > Table > Cost
To switch the table back to the default Entry table go to View > Table > Entry
I hope this helps - do let us know if you have any further questions.
Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:Keep constraining dates to a minimumAs far as possible avoid fixing the dates of your tasks. For example try to steer of clear dragging task bars in the Gantt chart to move them on the timeline or entering dates directly into the Start / Finish fields. |
