Data point bar labels

I have a bar chart showing staff performance values (vertical axis) and the staff are represented by each bar. The horizontal axis shows each bar (data point) as a number, but I would like the staff initials shown. Is this possible please?

RE: Data point bar labels

Are you using excel or access for this chart?

You need to look at the data labels. Do you have a field that the labels are pointing to?

RE: Data point bar labels

I am using Excel. Each chart is sourced to one column of data. The data is numerical values. The Excel spreadsheet has eight column headings each of which are a different test number and the perfomance values plotted are of the same format under each test number. I have a seperate chart for each test number, with all staff represented on each plot. The rows in the spreadsheet correspond to the relevent staff initials. The first column of the spreadsheet is used to show the staff initials. Only the data values are a source to the plots currently. I have tralled through every single available option on every tab that relates to formatting, with much effort concentrated on anything that might be to do with labels, I've tried them all out to see what they all do but this did not tell me how to label each plot with the staff initials. I very much appreciate you trying to help.

RE: Data point bar labels

Mark,

If you click on your chart, and then click CHART on the menu bar, then select SOURCE DATA. This will bring up the chart wizard. There are 2 tabs, click the SERIES tab. this shows the various series you have in the chart. There are two areas here worth looking at. NAME and X Axis. One of these can be modified to point to the staff initials.

Let me know how you get on.

Richard

RE: Data point bar labels

I tried putting it in Name first, this listed the entire series on each bar.
Then I put it in the X Axis, and this listed the initials along the X axis which was actually my prefered presentation. I then went to Format, and clicked Value for Data Label and this replaced the string of initials with the values. Perfect. Thank you.

New to Excel 2010 - Sparklines!

Excel 2010 includes a new feature called Sparklines which are tiny charts that fit into a single cell and plot data in cells from the worksheet. There are a host of formatting and styles that can be applied to them and they are really quite interesting.

>insert
>sparklines
>Choose any style you want

You will be asked for the range and it will automatically select the cell your in to insert the sparklines.
