Converting a number display

how do you convert a number in a cell shown as 5,000 and set as general to a number that can be used to create formulas etc. ?

RE: converting a number display

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your question. As long as Excel recognises the number as a number, the formatting doesn't matter. You will be able to use such a number in formulas.

To check if the number is actually a number, select the cell containing the number, then have a look in the Formula bar above. Any number will have a 'general' appearance there. E.g. in the cell, it might display as 5,000 but in the Formula bar, it will show as 5000.

To change a number's formatting, go to the drop-down in the Number group in the Home ribbon, then select General, etc.

If this reply doesn't answer your question, please do post again.

Kind regards

Press Ctrl+C to copy the values in the cell. On the Home tab, click Paste and then click Paste Values.
