Using datasets
We have a dataset sourcing from Azure which in turn is sourcing from an API and sourcing data from a network gateway. If I would like my team to use this dataset to practice what we have learned with transforming etc then I assume the safest action would be to download it locally, edit and then upload to their own workspace separately. However in an ideal world I would like their edited data to still connect to updates from original data source. what is best practice here?
RE: Using datasets
Hi Martin,
I hope you are fine.
Thank you for the forum question.
The team cannot "damage" the dataset, so I would just let them connect straight to the real source. This will give them the most real life experience working with Power Bi.
Kind regards

RE: Using datasets
Morning Jens,
Hope you're doing good. Thanks for the quick reply. If they do that and transform the data locally, when publishing back to the online service should they use their own workspace?
Ultimately, I want to grant admin access to that original dataset. When that happens I'm assuming they would be changing the online dataset when they publish back to it? Overwriting?
Apologies if I'm not understanding, it's not clear to me. If there is any online documentation about this exact process then please share.
RE: Using datasets
Hi Martin,
I understand that you want to make sure that you and your team do not ruin the original dataset.
I do not know how exactly your azure API connection is working, but what I tested today was.
I clicked on the three dots next to one of my dataset and downloaded the pbix file. In Power Bi Desktop I saved the file with a new name. Just to make sure that I kept the original dataset untouched in the downloaded file. In the renamed pbix file I deleted one of the tables from the data model and published the file with the new file name.
I just got a new dataset with the same connections to the source data as the dataset I downloaded, but I didn't change the dataset in the dataset I downloaded.
I strongly assume that you can do the same, but I do not know how your azure API connection is setup and working.
I have spent some time Google the question, and I have not been able to find anyone who has ruined the original dataset by doing the steps I did, but I will not be able to give you a 100% guaranty.
Kind regards

RE: Using datasets
Hi Jens,
I followed your steps in desktop (downloading the pbix file, I can change the data and relationships but cannot transform the data without errors such as the below. Is that expected? I'm trying to ascertain how I can get my team to practice transforming live data in the power query editor.
DataSource.Error: AzureBlobs failed to get contents from 'https://enable01.blob.core.windows.net/'. Status code: 404, description: 'The specified resource does not exist.'.

RE: Using datasets
Hi Martin,
I found this reply to the error. It looks like you do not have the right permission to access the dataset.
I assume this is your problem.

It can also have something to do with the privacy level.
