Project- calendars for part-time

I have some part time people working on my project, i have changed their calendar on Project so that certain week days are non-working.

However when i auto-schedule tasks it allocates to days when they are not in, i expect this to just jump to the next available day.

What do i need to do to fix this?

Thanks

Natalie

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Hi Natalie

In the Gantt Chart view the task bars don't split up on the days when part time people are not in. But the task should extend to give the right finish date.

If you look at the Resource Usage view (View tab, Resourse Usage) the non working days are shown in a light grey as for weekends. Also the Team Planner view shows the non working days for each person in grey.

Please let me know if that helps and if durations of tasks extend more for part time people compared to full time ones.

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Sorry this hasn't given me a solution. The part timers non-working days are correctly greyed out in the resource usage but it isn't extending the task to be the right end date.

Is there a set up option for this as i have had another case where i have removed the predecessor but the task dates haven't moved, this only sometimes happens.

Natalie

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Hi Natalie

Sorry that wasn't what you wanted.
Perhaps send part or your project if that's possible.

One quick option to to check
File, Project Options, Schedule, Calculation
Calculate Project after each edit should be ticked.

If you create a small example and it does the same thing, email it to the Forum and I'll have a look. After replying click on the Upload button to add the attachment.

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Here's my example when one resource, John works Mon-Wed. The finish date moves to the expected date when the duration is altered. See if it does with you.

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Doug,

I have created a test plan and have Karla working part-time on Thursday's and Friday's and Joe on holiday from 17 to 20 June however tasks are allocated to them when they are away.

Please can you let me know how to fix this, how do i upload my plan for you to view?

Regards

Natalie

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Hi Natalie

You will have to save the project example as a zip file first. (Right click Send to zipped compressed folder). Then reply in the normal way and click on Upload to attach the zipped file.

RE: Project- calendars for part-time

Hi Natalie

I've had a good look at the example you sent. The reason bars are not jumping to the next available day is because the task type is set to Fixed Duration for the project.

If you select all your tasks and right click, Information.
Click on Advanced tab, task type
Change from Fixed Duration to Fixed Units.

The bar doesn't split but extends to the next available working day which for Karla would be a Thursday.

When the task type is fixed Duration the task bars don't extend.

Hope that does it! I would also change your default setting on File, Options, Schedule, Default Task Type to Fixed Units.

MS Project tip:

Autofit column width – Project (all versions)

At the top of the columns where each column name is located (Task Name, Duration, etc.), hover over the vertical column line which you want to move.

A short bold vertical line will appear, with horizontal arrows pointing left and right.

Left click and hold this icon and it will permit you to grab the column line, allowing you to move it left or right to your desired location.
