RE: job duration

Hi Kerry

Thank you for sending through your project. It looks to me like the cause of the problem you are encountering is a conflict between two calendar settings.

First take a look at Change Working Time. If you click on a regular day in your calendar it shows (to the right of the calendar) that there are two parts to the day 8:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00 which gives room for a total of 7 hours of work in the day.

If you now click on the Options button at the bottom of the dialogue box and take a look at the section labelled Hours per day. Usually the figure here matches the space we set for hours of work in the calendar (in this case 7).

One cause of fractional durations can be if tasks are first created using the standard 8 hours per day setting in the calendar (8:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00) and then later the calendar time for the end of the day is set earlier (or later). With a shorter calendar, as we have here, Project has to somehow show the extra hours that previously fitted the longer day. This is when the display shows "excess" duration spilling over and creating fractions.

Before you make any further changes make a backup of your plan. If you have a version that doesn't have fractions in it. You may wish to roll back to that version.

Fixing this problem can be tricky. Changing the settings in the dialogue boxes will affect new tasks. You may need to copy your tasks into a new Project where the settings are correctly aligned, then set your durations and finally re-assign your resources.

With a Project of this size try a test with a few tasks first.
Let me know how you get on or if you have further questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew
