Transfer of files, backup, archiving-please refer to Andrew Hewe

for Andrew Hewertson please.
hello Andrew. We spoke this morning about trouble shooting with file transfers and backups of ordinary files and pst files. I am receiving error messages when I backup files from my laptop to an external hard drive or to my new laptop fom the old laptop.
The messages say things such as;
1. file name too long for destination folder.
2. folder/file cannot be moved.
3. pst file cannot be moved.
4. insufficeient space availalble-even though there is more than enough.

I have purchased a new laptop and I am tying to transfer everything across to the new laptiop. also I do a backup of everything every 3 weeks and encounter the above problems. so a lot of files are not backed up.

Hi Greg

The first resource that might be of help is an article from Microsoft - it's got a number of symptoms and possible solutions. I wondered if solutiions 2 or 3 sound like they might help.

I will continue to look and let you know what else I find.

RE: Transfer of files, backup, archiving-please refer to Andrew

i had to go back and shorten all file and folder names manually. this was the only way to do it.

however i still cannot back up a pst folder. any help with this would be appreciated.

RE: Transfer of files, backup, archiving-please refer to Andrew

Hi Greg

Thank you for letting us know, and I'm sorry to hear this is still a problem. I see many people have had problems with pst files remaining locked when trying to perform a backup.

It might be worth checking if Outlook is still running (using Task manager) and if it is then stopping its processes. Or perhaps there's another application that uses the pst keeping it locked?

If that doesn't work you might want to try storing your pst file in a folder that has a shorter path.

As a last resort you may have to manually copy the pst to its backup location.

Either way let me know how you get on.

Kind regards,
Andrew
