Worksheet name from cell

We have a table with dates consisting of mnth-yr in row name, down the left side.
We are trying to populate the table by using the row title (cell value) to pull numbers from another workbook. The month in Column A equals the tab names of the different sheets in the different work book.

e.g.

March 11 in cell A1 in workbook 1 . we want to get data from a sheet with the name March 11 in workbook 2.

However the tab name seems to be in text and does not seem to be recognised as a cell value.

Does it involve using the indirect function? and if so how?

How do we get the cell location to put into various vlookup formulas from column A instead of writing the location in?

RE: Worksheet name from cell

Hi Tashi,

Can you please clarify a couple of things?

When you say you want "to get data", do you mean you want to link the cells in some way? if you have march 11 in cell A1 where do you want to put the data you are looking for? A2 etc...?

The last thing you asked sounds like you want a combo box with a list of look ups opposed to typing in a value, is that correct?

thanks
Paul

Excel tip:

Showing all menu items

If you go into a pull down menu you usally find that you get a selection of items(this is the default) or sometimes everything. If you only get a selectiopn you have to go to the double arrows at the bottom of the menu and click it to get all of the hidden items.
To turn this off so that you always get everything, go to Tools / Customize / Options Tab / "Always show full menus". Make sure there is a tick in the box and you will always have every item.
