Linking formatting

is it possible to copy colours and formatting from one sheet to another when the cells are linked?

If the answer could be sent asap I would be grateful

RE: Linking formatting

Hello Claire,

Hope you enjoyed your Microsoft Excel Advanced course with Best STL.

Thank you for your question regarding linking cells between worksheets with formatting.

You can copy a cell on one sheet and use paste special > All using source theme into another sheet... but this only works with text items, numbers and dates. If you try this with a formula in a cell, it will bring across the formatting but the formula will now show a #REF! error.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.

RE: Linking formatting

Hello Rodney,

What I would like to do is link two workbooks. I.e when I update one cell including content and fomatting (colour) it updates the master sheet even if the master sheet is closed?

Thank you
Claire

RE: Linking formatting

Hello Claire,

As mentioned in my previous post, the same applies when linking to two workbooks. Unfortunately, if a cell in a workbook is linked to a cell in another workbook, the formatting does not come with it.

You will have to use format painter to copy formatting from one workbook to another.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

RE: Linking formatting

Dear Rodney,

How can I use format painter to copy formatting from one workbook to another.

Thank you,
Claire

RE: Linking formatting

Hello Claire,

Format Painter is located on the Home ribbon in the Clipboard group on the left-hand side.

Select a cell or cells with formatting on one workbook then click the Format Painter button, select the other workbook and click the cell that needs formatting. Format Painter will copy across all formatting.

I would suggest you create 2 sample workbooks and create some data in both and then format some cells in one workbook and the test out Format Painter.

If you double-click on Format Painter, then you can use it on different cell locations on another sheet or workbook or even on the same sheet.

Give it a try! Have fun!
