RE: Advance Filter

Hello Julie,

Hope you enjoyed your Microsoft Excel courses with Best STL.

Thank you for your question regarding Advanced filters.

To Create and Apply Advanced Filters
You probably have data lists that are filtered based on a pre-set criteria and you now need to determine your own criteria that is not part of a pre-set list. You can do this by creating and applying advanced filters to the data list.

It can be somewhat limiting to filter data based on pre-set choices, so if you create and apply an advanced filter, you can filter your data on whatever criteria you choose and narrow your results down to the most specific subset of data possible.

Filter Options
There are several filter options that can be used when you create an advanced filter. These are as follows:

Operator Purpose
“=text” Find exactly the text specified within the quotation marks
? Replaces any single character in the same position as the question mark
* Replaces multiple characters in the same position as the asterisk
= Equal to
< Less than
> Greater than
=< Equal to or less than
=> Equal to or greater than
<> Not equal to

How to Create and Apply Advanced Filters
1. From your data list, decide which column headings you wish to filter on
2. Add several blank rows above the data set
3. Copy and paste the required headings into the top row
4. Add the criteria you are looking for under the headings pasted as in #3.
5. Choose Data Ribbon→Sort & Filter section→Advanced Filter
6. Select the list range.
7. Select the criteria range.
8. Choose the location to filter the data.
9. Click OK

You should now have the filtered data you require.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.

Excel tip:

Use Paint Brush to Format More than one Cell

To copy a format to many cells or ranges

1. Select the cell with the format that you want to copy

2. Double-click on the paint brush

When you move to the cell where you want to paste the format you will notice that a paint brush follows the cursor.

Paste the format to all the cells or ranges you need to format.

When finished go back to the paint brush on the tool bar and single click on it to deactivate the function.
