RE: dollar sign

Hi Marcia

Thank you for your patience & once again apologies for the delay.

When creating formulas, the cell references i.e A1 used in the calculation work on a relative cell reference. This means if you copy the formula to other cells the cell references will change relative to the location you copy to e.g. A1 to B1 to C1 etc.

If however, you want the cell reference to remain a constant in the formula, meaning when you copy the formula to new locations the cell reference remains as it is i.e. A1, you would need to absolute (fix) the cell reference by adding dollar signs, e.g. $A$1, this will always refer to a cell in a specific location. If the position of the cell that contains the formula changes, the absolute reference remains the same.

Excel tip:

Some examples of CTRL key shortcuts in Excel 2010

Did you know that the old CTRL key shortcuts haven't changed from previous versions of Excel to the 2010 version?

They remain exactly the same:

Ctrl+B for bold
Ctrl+I for italics
Ctrl+P to Print
Ctrl+S to Save
