Linking spreadsheets
I am trying to link information in one spreadsheet to another.
I have the 2 spreadsheets open , one on each of my screens. I am placing an = sign in the cell I want populated. Then I go to the other spreadsheet and click into the cell containing the information I require and nothing happens. The equals remains in the original cell but it does not link.
Does anyone know how to make this link up
Thanks
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.
Can I please confirm you have two separate screens linked via a cable and you are trying to link one cell from screen to screen.
The method you are using is correct.
1. Place your cursor in the blank cell you want populated and place an equals sign in it.
2. Then double click on the cell in the other spreadsheet to create a link to it. The first click makes the spreadsheet active and the second click selects the cell.
3. Press enter to accept the formula.
I hope this answers your question.
Regards
Simon
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Simon
I have looked behind my 2 screens and they do not appear to have any cables joining them together. Just the power cables & cable to the PC
Do you think this might be why it won't work?
Thanks
Michelle
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your reply.
No I have thought about my initial response and it should make no difference whether the two cables are linked.
Try the = procedure again, make sure you double click on the cell in the other spreadsheet and then press enter. This should create the link.
Just to cofirm again, you have two monitors plugged into your pc?
Let me know if the linking worked.
Regards
Simon
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Simon
Well I can't get it to work. I can copy spreadsheets into PowerPoint fron one screen to the other but not from one spreadsheet to another.
It works fine when 2 spreadsheets are appearing on the same screen. But its more difficult to work with like that
Any further ideas?
Thanks
Michelle
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Michelle
I have been following your posts with Simon and I wanted to make a suggestion. As you are using two screens it is very tricky for us to interpret what you are doing.
Excel should behave as Simon outlined in terms of linking one spreadsheet to another. I would recommend you prove this to yourself by working on a PC with 1 screen.
Once you have reached a solution to your satisfaction you can then try it our on your own custom 2 screen setup.
regards
Jacob
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Jacob
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it again
When 2 spreadsheets are opened on the same screen then the linking works. But you have to switch between one and the other.
When I open up 2 spreadsheets by openning Excel twice, once for each spreadheet, I can drag one to the other screen Then they are side by side. However the linking bit then does not work
Hope this makes sence
Kind regards
Michelle
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Michelle
Sorry to hear you are still having problems with this. Would you mind giving the following a try and see if it produces the results you are looking for?
Open Excel as normal, then open both spreadsheets on the same screen.
Click the view tab on the ribbon and choose Arrange All from the Window group of buttons - your two spreadsheets should appear as two documents.
Drag one workbook to the other monitor and try to link a cell using the equals symbol as before.
Let me know how you get on.
Kind regards,
Andrew
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Andrew
Seems like you areall getting drawn into this one
I did as you suggested but the second spreadsheet will not transfer to the 2nd screen. It just disappears as you drag it across
However it is easier having that screen set up to see both sheets at the same time instead of having to switch between one and the other
Thanks
Kind regards
Michelle
RE: linking spreadsheets
Hi Michelle
Did you get to the cause of the problem linking across your Excel sheets? Let me know how you got on or if we can help with anything else.
Kind regards,
Andrew
RE: linking spreadsheets
Have both spreadsheets open, with the one containing the source data minimised and the one where you want the source data to go to maximised.
Single click in the cell where you want the source data to go, and press =.
Maximise the spreadsheet that has the source data in and click in the appropriate cell. The contents will show in the top of the screen.
Press enter and the screen will automatically go back to the spreadsheet where you want the data to be copied to, with the source data in place in the cell you chose.
Next time you open the spreadsheet that you have linked to it will ask if you want to update from the source data spreadsheet. Say yes.
Hope this helps.
Bob

Excel tip:Go to source of a cellThe default setting in Excel is when you double click in a cell it actives the formula in the cell. If you have created a link and want to directly go to that link (say if on another sheet, click on Tools -options and take off the tick for eidt it directly in cell |
