Finding links in a spreadsheet

I am working with an important spreadsheet that someone else (who's no longer here) set up. When I open it, I get a message that the workbook contains links to other data sources. This shouldn't be the case. How can I find where these links are located so I can delete them?

RE: Finding links in a spreadsheet

Hi Dee, thanks for your query. Remember that links to cells in the same Workbook will be described as e.g. Sheet2!A1 and links to other workbooks will put square brackets around the filename of the external workbook. So you can use Find to search for these characters:

Use CTRL+F to bring up the Find and Replace dialog box.

Click Options.
In the Find what box, enter ! or [
In the Within box, click Workbook.
In the Look in box, click Formulas.
Click Find All.

Hope this helps,

Anthony

Excel tip:

##### displaying in Excel

When you get a series of hash symbols (####) appearing in some of your cells in a spreadsheet, this can make you think that you've make some kind of mistake.

This is a common misconception - what this actually means is that the cell is not wide enough to fully display the content of the cell.

All you need to do to see what is actually in the cell is to widen the column that the cell is in.
