Pivot Table Field Grouping

Where I have used the field DATE as the field to group, I have selected DAYS, MONTHS and YEARS from the list in the Grouping box. This works very well, except for the result in the DAY column which lists each day in the format 21.Jul for example.

It would be more useful if the name of the day (e.g. MON) was displayed instead as this would then allow a user to analyse trends based on years, months or days of the week. Do you know of a way to overcome this problem?

Graham

RE: Pivot Table Field Grouping

Hi Graham

Thanks for your question

To group in the way you are requesting, you would need to group on "weekday", which is unfortunately not available in pivot tables.

One solution would be to insert a column into your data, and insert the weekday function. This function converts a date into a number that represents the day of the week on which it falls. You can then use this field in your pivot table as a row or column field, and the data will then be grouped as you require.

Stephen

Excel tip:

Counting Non Number Cells (Text)

If you try to use the COUNT FUNCTION =COUNT(Cell range)with a range of cells with numbers and or containing text fields you wil find that that the text cells will be excluded from the the count. If you want to include them try the the COUNTA FUNCTION =COUNTA(Cell range). This counts both text and number cell values.
