Task that must remain at a fixed number of working hours

I have two individuals working on Fixed Duration task that should take 70 hours over 10 days (7 hour working day). One individual is available to work 80% of the time on the task and the second individual is available 40% of the time. I have switched off effort driven scheduling and when I assign both individuals the total work hours adds up to 84 hours. How can alter the task to remain at 70 hours work using the 80% and 40% availability of my resources?

RE: Task that must remain at a fixed number of working hours

Hi Dor

Thank you for your queston. I just want to check re the assignment. When you have the resources assigned and the work is distributed at 7 hours per day for ten days between your two resources what final percentage split are you looking for?
This will guide us with regard to the final assignment.

Kind regards,
Andrew

RE: Task that must remain at a fixed number of working hours

Hi Andrew

Hadn’t thought about that originally, however, as long as Resource No. 1 is assigned at 80% or less and Resource No. 2 is assigned at 40% or less, I won't be concerned about the final outcome percentage split.

Many thanks
Dor

RE: Task that must remain at a fixed number of working hours

Hi Dor

Try this and see if it gives you the results you are looking for.

Set the task to fixed work. Split the screen (Window > Split) click on the task in questiion then set the task type to fixed work followed by OK.
Next assign you resources. You can assign them at the same time at their respective units of 80 and 40 followed by OK.

Project will then change the Duraton to allow for the two resources to complete 80 hours of work at their respective percentage units.

Let me know how you get on.

Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:

Typing Links Between Tasks

In the Entry table, use the Precessors column to type in links. Type the previous task's ID to link. To change the link, add FS (Finish-Start), FF (Finish-Finish), and so on, and + duration to add a Lag, or - duration for a Lead time. Example: for task 5, 4FS+1w ... task 4 preceeds task 5, finish to start, with a week lag between.
