Reasons for the sumif formula

When do we use this.

RE: Excel

Hello Nora

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

The SUMIF function is used on occasions where you want to create a total, but only for values that match a certain criteria. So add these numbers together for me, but only IF they match a certain criteria.

For example, if you had one column with people's names in it; then the next column contained some numeric value associated with that person (e.g. the amount of a sale they had made; the number of days they had taken off), you could use SUMIF to ask Excel to look at the list of names, use a specific person's name as the criteria to look for, then select the column of values you would like Excel to add from. It is particularly useful if the person's name appears more than once in the list, this way you don't have to manually pick out and add the numbers associated with that person together.

Kind regards
Amanda

Excel tip:

Hide columns in an Excel 2010 Worksheet

If you don’t want part of the Excel worksheet to be visible or when you don’t want certain data to appear in print outs, then a simple solution is to temporarily hide a column or multiple columns.

Hiding a single column:

1)Right click on the column header of the column you want to hide (this is the grey bar along the top edge of the worksheet)
2)Choose Hide from the menu
3)This column will now be hidden from view

Hide more than one column:

1)In the column header drag select to highlight the columns you want hidden
2)Right click and choose Hide from the menu
