Formula into a spreadsheet cell

Hi,

I am working with a spreadsheet that has numerous formulas used within it. I encountered a problem today where I entered a formula into the cell (which also shows it in the formula bar), but when I enter it, the formula stays in the cell, instead of the answer. What have a done wrong, and how can I fix it?

Cheers,

Dee

RE: Formula into a spreadsheet cell

Hello Dee

Thank you for your question.

It sounds like the spreadsheet is in formulas view, which would explain what you are seeing.

Try the following: go to Tools - Options - View tab, and under Window Options, see if the check box next to Formulas is ticked. If so, remove the tick and click OK.

Kind regards
Amanda

No, that box isn't ticked. Could it be that there is a problem if I have used those particular cells for formulas before, but deleted or cleared the cells?

Cheers,

Dee

RE: Formula into a spreadsheet cell

Oh well, at least we have crossed out that possibility...I've done a bit of research on the internet, it seems that the other likely cause is because Excel has some kind of problem with the way the = has been entered in at the start of the formula.

Perhaps check and make sure there isn't a blank space before the = sign; failing that you might find the following forum thread useful:

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers!

The site did have two possible solutions to the situation. Its nice to know that its a problem within Excel- and not something really daft that I've overlooked!
