Formula

what does () mean?

RE: formula

Dear Emma

Thank you for attending Excel Intermediate course!! I hope you enjoyed the course and benefited from it.

It depends on which context the () is being used. If you are using it in a function the typical structure (called the Syntax) of any function is =Function name (Cell Range)

In the above example cells that appear inside the parentheses () will be used for calculation.
e.g. =Average(A1:A10) means that A1 to A10 will be averaged.

If you are writing a formula with various Operators then anything that is within () will get calculated first.

e.g. B5+(C5-D10)*F15. This means that you want the C5-D10 to be calculated.

This is called BODMAS which Excel follows when performing calculation with various operators such as Plus, Minus, Multiply, Divide.

I hope this has answered your query.

If this has answered your query then I would request you to please mark the question as resolved!! If not and you have a specific question related to this then please post it as a new question and we should be able to provide you the solution for it!!

Kindest Regards
