Dear Rich

I would like to add a scrolling advert (marquee) for a forthcoming film to appear across our home page. I know that Gary showed us how to do that when I came on the course in January, but I have forgotten how to do it and can't find any reference to it in Dreamweaver Help.

Can you tell me again how to do this, please?

How to use the marquee tag in Dreamweaver

Good to hear from you again!

Firstly, keep in mind that the <MARQUEE> tag is not supported by the standards, so the effect may not work in all browsers. It was invented for Internet Explorer, so if the majority of your visitors use IE, it should be okay.

Also keep in mind it can be a really annoying effect, so use sparingly!

Dreamweaver doesn't really have an easy way to insert a marquee. Well, they don't have it built in like the Bold and Italic buttons. The easiest way is to edit your code, so place your cursor where you want to insert the marquee, and switch Dreamweaver to Code view or Code/Design split screen view.

In the code view, type <marquee (and a space) and you should see a drop-down appear with all the different parameters that the marquee can hold. You can then use the arrow keys to move up and down within the list, press Enter, and then type the value. Pressing space again, will bring the drop-down box up again, to insert another parameter.

To finish the tag, type > and Dreamweaver will end the opening tag, and also create a closing tag for you. eg. <marquee scrollamount="50"></marquee>

Then all that's left to do is to type (or paste) the text you want to scroll between the opening and closing tags. Experiment with the different parameters and values to see the different effects. I would recommend speeding the marquee up, as the the default is a bit slow.
