Excel and Access
When would you use an Excel database as opposed to Access and what would be the advantage of using the Excel database function instead of Access?
Thank you
RE: Excel and Access
Dear Charlotte
Thank you for attending Access Intermediate Course!! I hope you enjoyed the course and benefited from it.
Excel is a Spreadsheet program whereas Access is a Database program. Although the data in both of them is entered in rows and columns but they are used for two seperate purposes.
The major difference is that when you want to perform complicated calculations and manipulate numerical data you are better off using Excel. so for example if you are doing salary calculation or analysing some marketing reserach Excel would be ideal for that.
Access is a Database package which happens to be relational. So instead of having lots and lots of columns you have few tables that you can relate to each other and then extract information in forms of queries. A typical example of this could be if you are trying to find out the which products are being bought by which customers and which supplier is supplying them. So in Access you would create table such as Customers, Suppliers, Products and Orders. You would create relationship between the tables and you would be able to analyse the information without too much difficulty.
The main advantage of Excel over Access is that you can perform complicated calculations but Access can withhold much more records compared to Excel
I hope this has answered your query.
If this has answered your query then I would request you to please mark the question as resolved!! If not and you have a specific question related to this then please post it as a new question and we should be able to provide you the solution for it!!
Kindest Regards
