Graph Formatting

In a graph I have some blank cells in my range. This returns a zero when in the graph. I need this to not return any value. I've tried changing the value of the cells to #N/A and even text but it still returns a zero value on the graph. Any ideas how I can get it to return nothing if the cell is blank?

RE: Graph Formatting

Hi Emily

Thank you for your question (a very interesting one!) and welcome to the forum.

What kind of graph is it?

Amanda

RE: Graph Formatting

Amanda,

It is a 3D area graph showing cumulative monthly P&L. The timescale along the bottom was July to September and we wanted each month as a separate series so they were stacked one behind each other. However blank calls were returning an unsightly line.

Let me know if you'd like we to send you sample data.

Thanks

Emily

RE: Graph Formatting

Hi Emily

Sorry for the delay in reponse, I've only just seen your reply.

Yes, it would be useful to have sample data and I'll see if I can come up with anything - I might not have a chance to have a proper look for a few days but I would aim to come back to you by the end of Friday next week.

Please email the sample to forumATstl-training.co.uk for my attention. Use the @ symbol in place of the AT in the above address (we enter the email address this way it doesn't get picked up and spammed to death!)

RE: Graph Formatting

Hi Emily

I've had a look at the graph, and I can't figure out a way of presenting it in the way that you want within a 3D area chart.

The data can be represented in a line graph fairly easily, the question of course is whether that is suitable depending on how you wish to present the data.

I've attached an example with the line graph version for you.

Excel tip:

Importing Numbers in Excel 2010

Occasionally, when importing data into Excel you find that the some of the imported values are treated as text.

To convert these numbers to actual values, click on an empty cell and press Ctrl+C.

Next, select the range that contains the values you need to change and in the Clipboard Group on the Home tab, click the Paste drop-down arrow and choose Paste Special. In the Paste Special dialog box, select Add and then click OK.
