Protecting access to certain data

How do i give other people access to certain parts of a table but not to others?

RE: Protecting access to certain data

Hi Jacqueline

Sorry for the delay in answering this question.

In Access you can give certain people in your organization access to individual tables, forms, reports etc while preventing others from accessing them.

This is done by setting up database security and giving users permissions to interact with the database

To perform any activity in a database, user must have the appropriate permissions. These permissions fall into three categories, which are called permissions types:

- Permissions to work with data and execute procedures (object permissions).
- Permissions to create a database or an item in the database (statement permissions).
- Permissions to utilize permissions granted to predefined roles (implied permissions).

You can manually change database and object permissions for user and group accounts in a workgroup. It's advisable to assign permissions to groups, not to users, because each user inherits the permissions assigned to the group.

This is done in Tools Security. You can set up the groups And their permissions and then assign users to the relevant groups

Hope this helps

Carlos

Access tip:

Calculating The Difference Between Dates

If you wish to calculate the time between two date fields, this can be done in a number of ways:

1. As a calculated field in a query
2. As a calculated control in a form or report
3. As a calculation in a VBA procedure.

The basic syntax to get the number of days between two dates is:

=[One Date Field] - [Another Date Field]

You can also use one of the following functions:

=Month([One Date Field] - [Another Date Field])
which calculates the number of months between the two fields

=Year([One Date Field] - [Another Date Field])
which calculates the number of years between the two fields.

Another function is the DateDiff() function.

It uses an argument to determine how the time interval is measured. For example:

=DateDiff("q",[One Date Field] - [Another Date Field])
returns the number of quarters between the two fields.

Other intervals that can be used in this expression are as follows:
"yyyy" - Years
"m" - Months
"d" - Days
"w" - Weekdays
"ww" - Weeks
"h" - Hours
"n" - Minutes
"s" - Seconds
