Importing headers

Can I store header records in access and then re-use them to apply to new files for monthly extract purposes (headers are fixed, different monthly data to be imported into access form a text file which does not contain the headers)

RE: Importing headers

Dear Jane

Thank you again for your question.

If I understand this correctly you have text files that you want to import on a regular basis in seperate files (databases) but you want to keep the headings the same in the new tables!!

My suggestion would be to import the the table once in one database and then when you create another database then simply import the tabel with Definition Only so that only the design view is imported and not the records.

If you are planning to have the txt files imported as seperate tables within the same database then it is quite simple.

You choose File > Get External data > Import...

Follow the dialog box and then in the last step choose as new Table.

If you want the data to be imported in one big table then you follow the above mentioned steps but choose the Existing table option.

A word of caution: If you are importing the data on the same table then you might have to temporarily delete any relationships and unassign the primary key.

I hope this answers your query. Please mark this post as resolved if you are satisfied with the answer. If you need further clarification then please press the reply button and provide some kind of an example so that I can provide you a clearer explanation.

Many thanks

Kindest Regards

Access tip:

Relationship maps

It is important to create proper relationships between tables. You can use Access to help check your designs and evaluate them by printing them in graphical format to help with design purposes

Click on the Tools menu, click Relationships.
On the File menu, click Print Relationships. View or print as required
