why is there size limitations on all spreadsheets

I'm not sure if there is a FILE size limit? Is that what you mean? Or columns and rows?
A Microsoft Office Excel worksheet contains 65,536 rows and 256 columns. You cannot increase the number of rows or columns beyond the maximum row and column limits.

(The general thought seems to be if you need more rows, you should probably be using a database).
