Excel Data

How would you create a drop down menu in an excel sheet? For example you are distributing it to many people and you want them all to input the date with a selected format?

RE: Excel Data

Hi Lennon,

Thank you for your post, welcome to the forum:

In answer to your question;

To create a drop-down option in an input cell follow these steps:

1. Select the cell or range of cells to which you wish to apply the drop down.
2. Menu command Data>Validation,
3. From the dialog box from the Allow drop down choose List
4. In the Source Text box, Type your options separated by a comma, or insert the Cell References for a pre-prepared list from cells in your worksheet. (You can select the cells at this point if you prefer)
5. Click OK
Your list is created.

If you wish to edit the list at some time in the future, you can either follow the steps to open your list as above then edit the data or if you have created a list on your worksheet, edit the cells as necessary, the list will be updated. Note: if you delete your pre-prepared list the drop down will loose its data, however historical cells will still contain the information as entered.

I hope that helps, if so please click the resolved link, regards Pete

Excel tip:

Convert Text into Number

Some times numbers maybe imported in as text or you maybe concatenating numbers that form a text string that now are treated, because you had to extract them by Text functions

To convert Text into Number just encase the relevant cell reference or formula in the TEXT function. See Converting American Date to European hint

eg TEXT(Ref) or TEXT(formula)
