Pivot tables can take a bit of time to get your head around.
I would suggest having a look at some online tutorials which will help explain why pivot tables are useful:

2. Contextures.com and Peltiertech.com are web sites I've found helpful with relation to Excel. Here is a page on the web site which lists various topics related to pivot tables you can choose from:
