Mixing cells with whole and decimal numbers

If one wished to show numbers to decimal places in a column where an entry is not an whole number, but not have .00 if an entry is a whole number is that possible and how does one do it?

RE: Mixing cells with whole and decimal numbers

Hi David

By default cells are formatted so that if you enter a number with a decimal, it shows decimals, and if you enter a whole number it will only show the number.

However, if there is additional formatting on the cell (like currency, or comma formats), then the number is forced to show the decimal.

So, you could format the cells to their original state.

Select the relevant cells, Right-Click, FORMAT CELLS.
Chose the GENERAL number format (top).
Click OK.

That should do it.

Excel tip:

Quickly insert a function

In Excel 97 and 2000 it was known as the Paste Function dialog box, these days it's known as the Insert Function dialog box. Regardless, one has to choose Insert|Function. or the fx button to open it up. There is, however, a non-mousey way to get hold of the Insert Function dialog box: press Shift+F3 in a blank cell to open the Insert Function dialog.

Press Shift+F3 after a function name and open bracket to open the Function Arguments dialog. For example, type =VLOOKUP( into a cell and press Shift+F3 to obtain a detailed description of VLOOKUP's arguments.
