RE: Cell Formating

Hi Marc, Welcome to the forum, thank you for your post, in answer to your question, I must admit that in many years of using and tutoring in Excel, I have never come across that comment, although I have come across 'No more custom number formats can be added', to rid yourself of that little monster, follow these steps;
1. On the Format menu, click Cells, and then the Number tab
2. In the Category list, click Custom
3. In the Type box, select a custom format you wish to delete, one no longer used obviously :). Click Delete. You should now have space to create a new Custom Format, I'm not exactly sure how many custom formats you can create, but it is quite a few.
I hope that was the correct answer, if not please come back, if it has answered your probem, please click the Resolved link, best regards Pete

RE: Cell Formating

Hi Pete

Here is the warning I get:

Too many different cell formats

It happends when i try to change the color of the patterns or to add borders.

Do you have some experience whit this problem?

Cheers Marc

RE: Cell Formating

Hi Marc, Sorry Ive not come across that problem, have you tried my suggestion to remove some custom formats? Pete

RE: Cell Formating

Hi Pete

Yes I tried your suggestion, but as I do not have some specialised customer formats there is nothing to delete. I am working on a large spread sheet with the size of 6784KB; maybe this could be a reason for the problem. As I have many formats (Text formats, Number formats, but also colours) in some rows and columns. When I try to reformat some of these cells then appears this message:

To many different cell formats

Some times I have to close excell and reopen and then can I do the reformatin.

Cheers Marc

RE: Cell Formating

Hi Marc,

I think you may have hit the nail on the head so to speak, the size of your spreadsheet is quite large, however I have heard of one that was 96 Mb in size and on a 512 Mb RAM machine it kept givng the message "Not enough Memory", in a case like that it would depend on how much memory (RAM) you have on your PC, and what you are running at the same time, as you say you sometimes have to close Excel before you can continue - points to this. However Microsoft claim that the limit on an Excel spreadsheet is the computer's system + memory, ie as I said above everything that is running at the same time, including the operating system.
Check out this link;

Hopefully I'm not clutching at straws, and this is the problem, however only you can answer that; cheers Pete

Excel tip:

Colouring cells containing formulas

Cells in a worksheet can contain values or they can contain formulas. You may wish to identify all the cells in your worksheet that contain formulas by colouring those cells.

Follow these steps:
1. Choose Edit > Go To menu, or press either F5 or Ctrl+G. Excel displays the Go To dialog box.
2. Click Special. Excel displays the Go To Special dialog box.
3. Select the Formulas radio button option.
4. Select OK.

At this point, every formula cell in the worksheet is selected, and those cells can be coloured formatted as desired.
