FTP

I have taken over from someone who has now left the company for managing the website. I assumed that the first time I opend Dreamweaver after training there would be a site already saved there that I would work with.

There's nothing saved and the "root"/website folder that the ex-colleague left does not have all the web-pages saved, only about half of them.

I tried creating a new one using the domain name and FTP and password - when I tested it it all worked fine. I tried to "get files" from the remote site on the dual page, it starts, but then said "file activity incomplete 8 files or folders were not completed"

it is a relatively small site about 30 pages max. If I am only updating a few of the pages, do I need all the files? Can I simply use the files she had already saved in the "root" folder? Or do I need to get the files from the FTP site? Sorry if this question sounds confusing..I am confused!

Hi Clarissa,

The good news is, you can always save the pages directly from your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) if you can't get them via FTP.

Do you know which files Dreamweaver was unable to download (check FTP logs in Dreamweaver)? If so, and they are HTML files (web documents) you can browse to the files on the web site, go to File -> Save Page As (or Page -> Save Page As) and download to your local computer. Be sure to 'save as' type 'complete' which will also get the css, javascript and image files as well.

You can then copy or move these files into your appropriate local root folder.

You don't actually need all the web pages from the site on your local computer - only the ones that you will be updating. Indeed, perhaps your web site administrator has set permissions that deny you from downloading those files because they contain settings that make your web site run correctly. Check with your web site administrator.

And yes, you can use the files she has already saved in the root folder, but you should always download a copy of each file from the Remote site (via FTP) before working on a file, especially if more than one person is editing documents within the web site. (So that you don't overwrite any changes).

I hope this has relieved some confusion, not made more!

Hi,

I know this is quite some time later, but haven't had a chance to update!

Thank you for your help, that worked, however now I'm coming to the time when I will need to save the changes I have made locally onto the remote server again, so public can access our website.

I'm completely stuck!!

It says I must define a remote site. I know the providers of our FTP (1&1) and I know our username and password, but when I press the test button the error message comes up saying cannot connect to remote site. I don't know "host directory", don't know if this is affect it?

Sorry if this is a bad explanation, hope you can help?
