Symbols and foreign language letters
Is there a quicker way of inserting letters with symbols on them ie for German or French (to name 2 examples)? I use them often and wanted to know if there were any keyboard shortcuts or do I have to use the long (Insert/Symbol/search for the symbol) way around.
Thanks so much.
Kind regards
Dianne
RE: Symbols and foreign language letters
Hi Dianne
Thanks for getting in touch.
I can suggest three alternative ways to get access to the accented and other characters. Prolific users of foreign characters will have a reference guide for their ALT keyboard shortcuts, such as this one:
http://www.alt-codes.net/
So to access an acute e (é) you need to hold down the ALT key, press 1 3 0 on the number keypad, then release the ALT key. Once you've done these a few times you will be able to memorize them. Note this *must* be done on the number keypad.
Otherwise, note when you go into the Insert Symbol dialogue that it lists alternative keyboard shortcuts near the bottom of the window.
I can also suggest AutoCorrect if you're not a fan of keyboard shortcuts. In Insert Symbol there is an option for AutoCorrect. On the left you would type your 'shorthand' version of the code, on the right what you want it to say. So for example on the left you could write a phrase you would never usually use such as "eacute" and on the right paste the "é" symbol. Now whenever you type "eacute" it should substitute the symbol instead.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards

RE: Symbols and foreign language letters
That website with the Alt codes is awesome and thank you for the tip about the number keypad. I have been using the numbers above the alphabet keys and could never understand what I was doing wrong as it never worked.
Thanks so much again.
Kind regards
Dianne
