Selecting a Quickparts field in WORD disables other commands

Our company has chosen to use SharePoint and to add the SharePoint version number to our WORD 2010 documents as a Quickpart field (document property). This works OK.

However, when you select text that contains the field, numerous other WORD commands are disabled. For example, I use Ctrl+A then F9 to ensure that all the fields and cross references in our docs are properly updated, but F9 no longer works if the selected text contains the Quickpart field. We also have documents where the field is included as hidden text. If you want to unhide the text, CTRL+SHIFT+H no longer works and the whole of the "Font" command group is disabled. We use this section of the to record comments and responses, so we have a full audit trail within the document.

Don't know if adding any other field to a document has the same effect.

My question is, has anyone else experienced this and is there a way of stopping the "disable". This affects around 50 people, so a solution would be good!!!

Thanks

Simon

RE: Selecting a Quickparts field in WORD disables other commands

Hi Simon

Thanks for getting in touch.

Your CTRL+A F9 should do the trick. It may seem a little odd, but have you tried selecting a Print Preview? This also forces a refresh of all fields.

I can't replicate the other issue you have. Are you able to make it work if you show all characters (CTRL + SHIFT + 8)?

(To turn off all characters press CTRL + SHIFT + 8 again).

Kind regards

RE: Selecting a Quickparts field in WORD disables other commands

Hi Gary
Thanks replying. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a simple as Ctrl A + F9, or a print preview. If you select ANY text that contains the Quickpart field, almost all of the font or paragraph formatting commands get disabled, including anything that would update fields like f9. Ctrl SHIFT 8 doesn't help either.

If I delete the Quickparts field and do Ctrl A + f9, everything updates normally.

All suggestions gratefully received!

RE: Selecting a Quickparts field in WORD disables other commands

Hi Simon

Thanks for getting in touch.

I've had a chat with a couple of the other trainers and I'm afraid we can't find a solution. We don't run SharePoint here so it is difficult for us to test and diagnose - some articles suggest that it may be to do with the SharePoint setup but it is not conclusive. Perhaps talk to your SharePoint administrator?

There may be an answer in VBA code but again, without having access to the same setup as you it's difficult to test.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to offer more help.

Kind regards
