Changing number bullet point levels

Hi there. I am formatting a document and need to have several numbered levels eg. 1, 1.1, 1.2

This is how far I have got: 1, next level * (normal round bullet point). I have then changed and gone back and started the next sentance with a 2. I have several levels that need to appear under 2 being 2.1, 2.2, etc. However, when i change the level to 2 and indent the next sentance to a bullet point it becomes 1.1 and not 2.1! I have tried everything - changing list level, define new number format and setting number value. Anything that something might be hiding in!

This is what I am trying to do:
1.
* (normal round bullet point)
* (as above)
* (as above)
2.
2.1
2.2

This is what it presently looks like:
1.
* (normal round bullet point)
* (as above)
* (as above)
2.
1.1
1.2

Thanks and kind regards
Charlotte

RE: changing number bullet point levels

Hi Charlotte, thanks for your query. I'm afraid this is very difficult to advise you on without seeing your document and doing some development work on it, which would venture into the realms of consultancy. However, I'd suggest rebuilding the whole thing using styles:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/outlinenumbering.html

Creating a consistent and robust numbering system in Word tests the best of us I'm afraid and is practically the basis of an entire industry so see if the above link works. Failing that, contact our information line and we can arrange to look at the document for you.

All the best,

Anthony

Word tip:

Using the Quick Access Toolbar in Word 2010

The Quick Access Toolbar is included in virtually every Office product, including Outlook 2010, Word 2010, Excel 2010, and PowerPoint 2010.

You will find the Quick Access Toolbar in the top-left side of the window. To begin, click the Customize button (it's the little black arrow at the end of the toolbar).

Simply click the commands you want to include.

Virtually any command can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar. Click the More Commands option and a new window will open from where you can browse the commands including those not on the ribbon.
