Numbering

Quite often I need to nuber different sections of a word document in the format below.

Section 1
1.1 sample text
1.2 sample text

Section 2
2.1 sample text
2.2 sample text

Section 3
3.1

What will be the best way to do this as if I try to set new numbering value, continue from previous and begin from 2.1 then it enters a 2 above this.

RE: Numbering

Hi Polly. Thanks for your query and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. You need to use styles to achieve this numbering quickly and efficiently. There is already a built in list style that will do this for you, but essentially you need to format your "Section 1" type text as Heading 1 and make sure when doing so you base them on the Normal style. The 1.1 style needs to be formatted as "Outline numbered Level 2" making sure they are based on the Normal style. If you set up the styles like this, the numbering you should be achievable. Remember that once you get the first section correct, and the Section2 numbering starts correctly you can use your style sheet or format painter to apply the rest of the numbering correctly to the document.

Hope this helps but let me know if you need any further help with this.

Word tip:

Create bullets or numbering without pressing a button!

If you want to create a bulleted or numbered list in Word, you can do so without using the bulleting or numbering buttons on the toolbar.

Here's how:

To start a bulleted list:
Type in an asterisk (*) or a hyphen (-) followed by a space then your text and press Enter.

The asterisk or hyphen should convert to a bullet point, and a second bullet point should appear next to your cursor position.

Creating a numbered list:
Type in 1. or 1) followed by a space then your text. When you press the Enter key, Word will convert this to an automatically numbered list. The number 2 will automatically appear next to where your cursor is positioned on the page.
