Page numbering

How do I start page numbering on page 4, leaving the first three pages blank?

RE: page numbering

Hello Eileen

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

You can start page numbering from a number other than one by going to Insert, and clicking the Page Number button on the Insert ribbon.

There will be a Format Page number option. If you go into this option then down near the bottom of the dialogue box, select the Start at: option and type in 4 (or whatever number you want the page numbering to commence from).

RE: page numbering

thanks, but that's not my problem. I would like to have the first few pages without any numbers, then to start the numbering at 1 on the fourth page. By starting the numbering at 0 I can get the first page without numbering but I would like to know how to get more than one page numberless.
Thanks.

RE: page numbering

Hi Eileen

You need to remove any page numbering you have currently applied, and then split the document into two sections.

To do this, insert a section break at the end of the last page that you don't want numbering on. Go to Page Layout, and click the Insert Page and Section breaks button, and select Next Page section break.

Position your cursor at the top of the first page you want numbering on, and go into the header or footer on the Insert tab (depending on where you want the page numbering to go) and select the Blank option.

When you go into the header or footer, you should see Header (or Footer) Section 2, and something else that says Same as Previous.

On the Header and Footer design tab, click the button that says Link to Previous. Then insert your page numbers from the Header and Footer design tab. Once you have inserted the page numbering, then click the Page Number button again, go to Format Page Numbers, select Start at and type in 4. Click OK.

I hope this helps.

RE: page numbering

thanks but I want the page numbering to start at 1 but on the fourth page, with the previous three pages blank

RE: page numbering

Hi Eileen

You would do exactly as I described in my previous post, but instead of setting the numbering to Start at: 4, set it to Start at: 1.

I hope this helps.

Many thanks Amanda, not only for your knowledge, but also for your perseverence. This worked a treat.

Using the Ctrl key

Using the Control (Ctrl) Key in conjunction with other editing keys can provide you with some editing shortcuts.

- Use Ctrl in conjunction with the Left or Right Arrow keys to move your cursor one word at a time.

- Use Ctrl in conjunction with the Delete key to delete one word at a time to the right of the cursor position.

- Use Ctrl in conjunction with the Backspace key to delete one word at a time to the left of the cursor position.

- Use Ctrl in conjunction with Page Up or Page Down keys to scroll one page up or one page down at a time.

- Use Ctrl in conjunction with the Enter key to create a new page in the text from where the cursor is positioned. This inserts a page break.
