Different Excel Releases

I have both Excel 2003 and 2007 loaded on my PC. I mostly use 2003 as it is the current Company standard. The reason for having 2007 as well is because I occasionally have to work on spreadsheets greater than 65,000 rows. My problem is that whenever I like to open a workbook by double clicking it in Explorer, when I do this it is opened with 2007 when I really want 2003. Is there any way of setting 2003 as the default program when opening a spreadsheet? Many thanks

RE: Different Excel Releases

Hi Graham

You can change the default program used to open the file.

Right click on the file in Explorer view.
Choose 'Open With'
Choose 'Choose program...'
Look for the 2003 version of Excel in the list select it and then look for the check box towards the bottom of the window taht reads "Always use the selected program to open this file"
Then OK to finish.

Hope that helps.

RE: Different Excel Releases

David,
Thanks for your response. I'd already tried that route. Excel 2004 is not in the list of alternative programs. There is a browse button, I clicked that and found excel 2003 the OFFICE11 folder in the MS Office folder. However, when selected the file is still opened with Excel 2007.

Any other ideas?

Regards
Graham

RE: Different Excel Releases

Office11 is indeed Office 2003. However, as far as I'm aware, Office 2007 takes control over office files if it's installed. You won't be able to open them in Office 2003 by double clicking the file if you have Office 2007 installed, because they're the same program. But Office 2007 is the most recent, so Windows uses that.

Opening Office 2003, then using File -> Open should work.

As a training company, we faced this problem when Office 2007 was released: half of our delegates wanted training in Office 2003, and more and more delegates required training in Office 2007. The obvious solution is to have both installed on the computer. During our tests, we found that we experienced problems with this, one of the main ones being the one you mention in your original post.

Therefore, we now have two partitions on our machines with a separate Windows operating system installed on both partitions. One partition has Office 2003 installed, the other has Office 2007, thus allowing us to train our delegates in either version.

Microsoft does not recommend having more than one Office version installed. But they do give advice for people who require it. See this article for more information Graham:

RE: Different Excel Releases

Rich,
Thanks for your detailed expalanation. Looks like I'm stuck with the problem till my company moves to Excel 2007. I just have to open Excel 2003 first, then do a FILE/OPEN every time rather than clicking on the required file in Explorer.
Thanks again
Graham

Excel tip:

Jumping Between Sheets in a Book

PgDn and PgUp keys scrolls up and down a screen page in most applications.

Ctrl+PgDn and Ctrl+PgUp keys jump from one sheet in your workbook to the next, up or down through the pages.
