Columns in Word

Having formatted some text into columns and then entering a footnote before them, forces the columns to the next page.
It makes no difference which order you do things, the result is always the same: cols. moved to a new page.
All help gratefully received.

RE: Columns in Word

Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your question. I am trying to replicate your problem on my PC, but do not have the same issue you are experiencing. To clarify, you are trying to insert a footnote at the top of the page? Could you click on the icon on your standard toolbar that looks like a backwards "P" to show formatting marks? This may show you a page break that you did not know existed. Otherwise, if you would like to attach the document you are working on, I can have a look and see if anything else comes to mind.

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved. If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. And please feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Mara

RE: Columns in Word

Hello, Mara,
Thank you for your interest. Sorry for the delay - holiday.
The system does indeed force a page break immediately above the columns as soon as you insert a footnote anywhere above the columns. It seems not to matter what you do first, footnotre or columns; as soon as you attempt the second operation the page break is forced above the columns.

Yours, puzzled
Andrew

PS how do I attach a document to this to send you

RE: Columns in Word

Hi Andrew,
Now, I was on holiday, so sorry for the delay in replying.

To attach a file, first reply to this message, click Submit, and then you will see a link that says "upload." Just follow the steps from there. I would be very keen to have a look and see what we can find out.

What version of Word are you using?

Regards,
Mara

RE: Columns in Word

Hello again, Mara
Attached is an example of what happens.
Random text - less than a page - Second half formatted into 2 columns.
Insert a footnote any where in text above the columns forces a page break before the columns.
I am using Word 2003
I am sending two attachments(I hope) - before and after the footnote insert after the first word.
Yours, still puzzled but hopeful.
Andrew

RE: Columns in Word

RE: Columns in Word

Hi Andrew,
Do you see any "Upload" links in prior posts that you have sent in this string?

RE: Columns in Word

Hi Andrew, Excuse me for butting in at this point Mara but I can see a possible solution, maybe if you try; in the dialog box for Insert Footnote/Endnote, in the Location area of the dialog box there is a drop down option with the options Below Text and Bottom of Page, default (Bottom of Page) will cause a new page to be inserted before the column text, if you choose Below Text the Footnote will be inserted before the new section (columns) if you wish the Footnote to be at the bottom of the page (single page of text) or at the end of the Document (mulitple pages) change the Footnote to an Endnote. I hope that has helped, best regards Pete.

RE: Columns in Word

His(supposed to be hi in plural form!!),Mara and Pete,
My thanks to you both for your efforts.
Pete you have come up with a partial solution but it does appear that if, in a multiple page document, a footnote is required at the end of a page it is not possible to have text in columns on that page after the footnote indicator.
If I have that right it seems a bit wierd to me and is perhaps one for the boffins at MS.
Once again many thanks to you both.
Andrew

PS An excellent site - keep it up - A

RE: Columns in Word

Just to confirm, for security reasons, there is no 'upload' link for 'delegate' accounts on this forum. Only trainers can upload files.

This may be changed later when we can safely scan files, but for now, only trainers can upload.

This is why you cannot see the 'upload' link.

Regards, Rich
